Microsoft Windows Scam

Posted By on November 18, 2011

Very recently there has been another spout of telephone scams targeting PC users into revealing their bank details through installation of malicious software.

A group of people have been pretending to be members of Microsoft whom ask for a remote connection to your PC claiming it’s for computer repairs and they then go ahead and install malicious software which tracks your keyboard inputs so that they can acquire your bank details.

If you have been approached by these imposters and have allowed them access to your PC then you are at risk, you should monitor your bank account finances very carefully over the next few months and you should warn your bank that your security has likely been compromised.

Remember, Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls to help fix your computer, they will never ask for bank account details for any reason and they will never phone to say you have won something.

Peak Time Internet

Did you know that the time of the day can dramatically affect your download and upload speeds for the internet?

Many Internet Services Providers conveniently ignore this factor when advertising their download speeds and also their tests are sometimes from right next to the exchange. This distance will falsify the speeds obtained if you live further away as distance matters.

A graph obtained from the BBC using uSwitch’s information is shown below.
A graph showing how broadband speed is affected by time of day. Graph from BBC who obtained information from uSwitch.
“Not many internet users enjoy the maximum headline broadband speeds offered by providers, and certainly not during the working week,”

-uSwitch’s technology expert Ernest Doku.

The graph quite clearly shows a difference in 35%, The speed has been proven differ from an average of 35% up to 70% when comparing the early hours of the morning to peak time.

Almost half of broadband users are now on packages with advertised speeds above 10Mbps but the average broadband speed is 6.8Mbps according to Ofcom.

So in conclusion, when checking what deals are available for your internet packages, make sure the package you opt for will give you the speeds they advertise during peak time. Otherwise you could be paying for a service you won’t receive.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Posted By on November 11, 2011

Another sequel in an incredibly popular series is what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is. You’ll notice many of the same features from the other games of the modern warfare category with a couple more added for expansion.

The multiplayer has been redesigned with a different look on how to gain “killstreaks” where you can now obtain them through capturing points. In addition to the multiplayer the game offers co-operative game play through survival mode, where tactical waves of enemies go against you while you try to hold them off.

To those who play the PC version of this game, there are quite a few clear signs that the game is a console port. The most significant evidence is the graphics upscaling, by default the game upscales a small image of around 1280×720 up to your monitor resolution. To get your native graphics settings you need to go to Advanced Video > Image Quality, and change it to “Native”. The native option makes the game render correctly to your display settings, while the extra option makes the game upscale a small resolution. The disadvantage of native display is that you will be rendering a higher resolution, thus if you have an old PC you might notice performance drops.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Posted By on November 10, 2011

The long awaited sequel to the Elder Scroll Oblivion is finally on it’s way and will be released tomorrow. Skyrim’s main story revolves around the player character’s efforts to defeat the nordic dragon god Alduin who is prophesied to destroy the world. Set two hundred years after Oblivion, the game takes place in the land of Skyrim in the midst of a civil war after the assassination of the high king. The open world gameplay of the Elder Scrolls series is continued in Skyrim, as the player character can explore the land at will and ignore or postpone the main quest indefinitely.

One of the boasting features of Skyrim is infinite randomly generated content which means that after the main story sections you can theoretically have random quests forever, thus giving a unique gameplay experience.

Thai Floods Damage Production!

Posted By on November 2, 2011

Thailand is currently facing a national crisis as months of heavy monsoon rain have caused flooding throughout the country. Floods have overwhelmed over a third of the country’s provinces since July which has led to the deaths of more than 370 people. The rain waters have also affected parts of neighbouring countries Vietnam and Cambodia.

Other Major concerns that are beginning to arise are the Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River, which the Thai authorities fear could burst its banks at any moment and that floods comes waterborne diseases which would potentially cause an epidemic.

Production lines of Hard Drives and Cameras have also been seriously damaged in the recent Thai floods causing a drop in 30% production rates of Hard Drives. A knock on effect of this has been an increase in Hard Drive costs as so much damage has occured to numerous supplying factories.

A rough figure shows that around about 14,000 factories have been affected by the flood, It’s speculated that the supply shortage could last into the first half of 2012, as Thailand is the world’s second largest produced of devices after china.
